Safety ON THE DECK What are ways we can show love? ● Make sure your campers are safe and cared for at all times. No opposite genders in cabins. ● You must complete the sex abuse prevention online training before camp. 6
TBRI with Scott Watters of AOH Trust Based Relational Intervention is a set of principles and strategies to give us the tools to bring healing and well-being to children & teens. Our camp curriculum is an integration of these principles and truths we read in Scripture, specifically in the life of Peter. -->Here is a brief overview of TBRI, attachment styles, and some quick “How Tos” that will help us implement these strategies at camp! 7

Safety is a big job ● Buddy System - Don’t be alone with campers! Take another camper, JC and/or counselor with you always. ● Bunks -are for one person ONLY ● Safe Touch -side hugs, shoulder touch, high fives, cabin handshakes ● Attitudes - Part of safety is emotional. Model a good outlook. Avoid complaining. 14
DAILY MEETINGS Adults at 7:30am Dining Hall Porch (Sun-Tues) Elem counselors, a rep from MS, a rep from PALS ● Feedback, modifications, & coffee! ● Discretely alert Becky about bedwetters. (She will take care of the sheets.) ● Wake your campers & JCs before leaving for the meeting JCs at 9:30pm at Dining Hall Porch (Sat-Tuesday) ● Prep toiletries & say a quick goodnight to campers 15
Where are my campers? ● Be vigilant in maintaining safety and directing campers to where they are supposed to be! ● YOU are the guide! Once campers arrive, you are on the job. Awake early to help, get involved with the campers in all their activities. Show genuine interest in them. ● No loners. Help campers be involved. 16
FOCUS ON THE CAMPERS YOUR phone is ONLY to be used as a ➔ Watch ➔ Communicating with cabin leaders ➔ Camera Campers are NOT to bring phones nor to use yours. 17
Where are my jcs? ● JCs signed a contract that they will return to the cabin upon curfew and STAY in the cabin all night-- especially the last night! ● Encourage, empower, & correct when necessary ● Counselors are to hold the JCs accountable and disciple them in these important roles at camp. Everyone stays on campus at all times. ● JCs - if you drive to camp, your keys will be collected. 18
WHAT TO WEAR ● Visible shorts ● One-pieces or tankinis (or shirt over 2- piece swimsuit) ● Coverups/t-shirts for walking to the pool ● Closed-toed shoes outside of the cabin (flip flops are ok for walking to the pool, but you may want swim shoes) 19
Out in the sun ● CANTEEN is for everyone ! ● NO cash needed at camp ● HOCC staff will keep track of what everyone consumes from your cabin. (2 items per day) ● Sunscreen and bugspray for everyone 2x/day ● NO lake access unless lifeguards are present 20
Water, a/c & more ● Drink water!!! ● Bring an extra water bottle ● Most nausea and fatigue is due to dehydration, so continually encourage campers to drink water . ● Doors closed, A/C to stay on 72 degrees. ● No smoking--not even e-cigarettes 21
First aid NURSE -> Kelli Grelle 972-742-6000 ● Medications for minors with nurse (except inhalers) ● Remind campers with *asterisks* to see the nurse for meds at mealtimes. Only the nurse is to give out meds. ALLERGEN ADVOCATE -> Alyssa Daw 214-728- 1122 ● Send your campers with food allergies through the line FIRST and connect them with Alyssa or find out what they CAN eat. FIRST AID KITS Carry one kit per cabin for scrapes, etc. 22
MEAL TIMEs ● Cabins go through the meal line together. Ask questions about what they are learning. Make sure there is a combination of 2 counselors or 2 JCs eating with kids at all mealtimes. Rotate. ● Encourage the kids to eat healthy foods first and to finish most of their food. ● Send those with meds to Nurse Kelli at breakfast! 23
Rest Time ● Tired kids = cranky kids ● Mandatory Rest time means horizontal in bed ● They don’t have to sleep, quiet is good ● Counselors & JCs: Coordinate a schedule for everyone in your cabin to take a break each day--stagger them 24
TIDY UP! ● Clean your cabin before breakfast ● JCs helping & modeling ● Cabins are given points based on cleanliness. 25
BREAKING THE ICE Use the provided ice breaker ideas to help campers warm up to the group. Ice breakers ● Set a standard of friendship, trust, and teamwork. ● Help kids who have trouble engaging to feel comfortable. ● Can be cabin handshakes and implement on the first day ● Can be extra craft supplies you take for cabin time (ask Marla) 26
Leading Small Group Time! ● Small Group questions are attached in the back of this packet. ● 30 Second Rule: ○ Silence is okay ○ Wait for answers. ● You’re a facilitator -not a teacher ○ Ask open-ended questions so they can share thoughts and feelings. ○ Share the role of facilitator 27
Leading Small Group Time! ● Ask follow up questions. “Tell me more.” “How do you feel about that?” ● Allow the Holy Spirit to work through the study material, the reflections and questions. “What’s something you will do?” ● While it’s cool to share your own stories, focus on the campers and look them in the eye. ● Call on the quiet ones by name - don’t force participation, but invite personally. This also helps guide over-talkers. ● Acknowledge the responses of the sharers ○ “Thanks for sharing”/ “I like that”/ “Very good” 28
Communications ● If someone says something and you don’t know if you should tell one of us, lean toward telling. ● Are you receiving Remind texts? Text to 81010 with message @highok to opt in. 29
Inclusion! ● Be gentle and listen. ● No loners. Inclusion is crucial at mealtimes. ● Take turns with JCs and counselors deciding who’s on lunch duty with 2 leaders per table. ● Campers eat fast and are eager to leave after eating. ○ Silly Songs on Porch after breakfast ● Rotate with leaders on who will go with them/ find ways to keep table entertaining. 30
Mail time Mail is bliss! Homesickness is not. JCs are responsible for making sure every kiddo has at least one piece of mail every day. We’ll have paper and markers available. Pass it out in the morning; NOT at night! 31

ARRIVAL times! Counselors and JCs: Must arrive at 3pm on Saturday, June 15. Please do NOT arrive before 3:00! They will be cleaning cabins & won’t allow for entrance. Campers: Arrive between 4-5pm. 34
When You Get There ● Get settled & be ready to receive campers who arrive between 4-5. ● Transition of power: “Do I have the power to be in charge of your child while at camp?” ● Watch for vehicles arriving and offer help. ● Get familiar with the campgrounds & your tasks. 35
Sync, don’t Sink ● Song is appropriate (obviously); 2 minute clip ● Every camper gets their chance to shine ● Create “characters” - embody someone goofy, serious, diva-ish, etc. ● Props, costumes, and storytelling ● Balance between boring and complex; repeat moves 36
