Why the changes? ¡ According to the College Board: • Pressure from academic community (go beyond “assessment” and deliver “opportunity”) • To better integrate with rigorous classroom instruction • Less than half of students who take SAT are “college ready” ¡ THE ¡ PRINCETON ¡ REVIEW

An Alternate Theory ¡ The Princeton Review’s take: • More students are choosing to take the ACT and the SAT wants to regain its dominance. • Test preparation works … too well! • The College Board claimed the same reasons for making changes the last time they changed the tests. Changes & The Common Core How ¡do ¡the ¡changes ¡related ¡to ¡the ¡Common ¡Core? ¡ • It’s no coincidence that the architect of the Common Core is now president of the College Board. • Question types on the redesigned SAT may not resemble official CC assessments. • The content tested on the redesigned SAT will have a closer relationship to that taught under CC standards, but students will need to prep differently. • Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because your students are learning the content that they’ll be able to apply it on the redesigned SAT without some help . October ¡2014: ¡ October ¡2015: ¡ Current ¡PSAT ¡ Redesigned ¡PSAT ¡ What does this mean for Class of 2017 students? • If you took the current PSAT in October 2014 and were in 10 th grade, it can be practice for the current SAT, but it will not be practice for the redesigned SAT, nor will it qualify you for National Merit. • If you take the redesigned PSAT in October 2015 when you are in 11 th grade, it can be practice for the redesigned SAT and it will be the qualifying test for National Merit.
