A ¡Review ¡of ¡ ¡ Southampton ¡High ¡School ¡ ¡ Grading ¡and ¡Class ¡Rank ¡Regula8ons : ¡ ¡ Past, ¡Present ¡and ¡Future ¡ Presenta5on ¡to ¡the ¡SHS ¡Students ¡ October ¡24, ¡2012 ¡

Past: ¡ ¡2009-­‑2012 ¡ Ranking ¡was ¡eliminated ¡in ¡the ¡spring ¡of ¡2010, ¡to ¡be ¡effec5ve ¡ for ¡the ¡Class ¡of ¡2014 ¡(the ¡incoming ¡freshmen ¡class ¡at ¡the ¡ 5me; ¡our ¡current ¡junior ¡class). ¡ ¡ • This ¡decision ¡emerged ¡from ¡a ¡seven ¡month ¡process ¡carried ¡out ¡ by ¡the ¡ Southampton ¡Ranking ¡Commi9ee ¡ which ¡was ¡comprised ¡ of ¡teachers, ¡administra5on, ¡parents ¡and ¡Board ¡members. ¡ • Research ¡demonstrated ¡that ¡na5onal ¡and ¡local ¡trends ¡among ¡ colleges ¡and ¡public ¡high ¡schools ¡indicated ¡a ¡departure ¡from ¡ class ¡rank. ¡ • High ¡schools ¡that ¡had ¡eliminated ¡class ¡rank ¡indicated ¡an ¡ increase ¡in ¡college ¡acceptances. ¡

• The ¡difference ¡in ¡GPAs ¡among ¡the ¡highest ¡achieving ¡students ¡ was ¡becoming ¡so ¡narrow ¡that, ¡in ¡many ¡cases, ¡hundredths ¡of ¡a ¡ point ¡separated ¡them. ¡ • The ¡intense ¡compe55on ¡for ¡top ¡ranking ¡created ¡undue ¡stress ¡ for ¡some ¡while ¡fostering ¡gamesmanship ¡for ¡posi5oning. ¡ ¡ Further, ¡for ¡the ¡Class ¡of ¡2014 ¡and ¡beyond, ¡the ¡ Southampton ¡ ¡ Ranking ¡Commi9ee ¡ recommended ¡the ¡following ¡ honors ¡ recogni8ons ¡ (in ¡lieu ¡of ¡ranking), ¡as ¡a ¡means ¡of ¡acknowledging ¡ academic ¡excellence: ¡ ¡ Summa ¡Cum ¡Laude ¡ ¡ ¡ GPA ¡of ¡95+ ¡or ¡weighted ¡average ¡>95 ¡x ¡1.6= ¡152 ¡ Magna ¡Cum ¡Laude ¡ ¡GPA ¡of ¡90+ ¡or ¡weighted ¡average ¡>90 ¡x ¡1.6 ¡= ¡144 ¡ Cum ¡Laude ¡ ¡ ¡GPA ¡of ¡85+ ¡or ¡weighted ¡average ¡>85 ¡x ¡1.6 ¡= ¡136 ¡ ¡ Transcripts ¡and ¡diplomas ¡reflect ¡these ¡dis5nc5ons. ¡

Recent ¡Past: ¡March-­‑June, ¡2012 ¡ • With ¡the ¡Class ¡of ¡2014 ¡rapidly ¡approaching, ¡ last ¡March ¡(2012), ¡the ¡Board ¡of ¡Educa5on’s ¡ Policy ¡Sub-­‑CommiYee ¡decided ¡to ¡review ¡the ¡ current ¡ Southampton ¡High ¡School’s ¡Grading ¡ and ¡Class ¡Rank ¡Regula8ons ¡ to ¡ensure ¡that ¡ these ¡regula5ons ¡set ¡forth ¡prac5ces ¡that ¡ would ¡con5nue ¡to ¡present ¡our ¡students’ ¡ academic ¡careers ¡in ¡the ¡best ¡light ¡possible. ¡ ¡ ¡

Several ¡relevant ¡issues ¡emerged: ¡ 1. To revise the existing policy to align with changes in NYSED Commissioner's Regulations (i.e., changes in RCT Safety Net) and current accountability practices. 2. To explore and discuss the next logical step following the elimination of ranking – to consider the elimination of valedictorian and salutatorian. 3. To clarify and define the parameters of courses taken outside of SHS and if/how such courses impact upon the student's SHS official high school record.

June ¡24, ¡2012 ¡ • The ¡Board ¡of ¡Educa5on, ¡(aZer ¡three ¡readings ¡and ¡a ¡ public ¡presenta5on), ¡acted ¡on ¡the ¡recommenda5ons ¡ to ¡align ¡the ¡ Grading ¡and ¡Class ¡Rank ¡Regula8ons ¡with ¡ changes ¡in ¡NYSED ¡Commissioner’s ¡Regula5ons ¡and ¡ current ¡accountability ¡prac5ces. ¡ – Updated ¡RCT/Safety ¡Net ¡language ¡reflected ¡in ¡the ¡ Requirements ¡for ¡Gradua5on ¡sec5on. ¡ – Eliminated ¡the ¡prac5ce ¡of ¡edi5ng ¡failing ¡grades ¡(to ¡“F”) ¡on ¡ official ¡transcripts ¡– ¡therefore ¡providing ¡true ¡ accountability ¡to ¡NYSED. ¡ – Updated ¡the ¡Athle5c ¡Department ¡policies ¡to ¡align ¡with ¡ current ¡prac5ce. ¡

July-­‑September, ¡2012 ¡ • The ¡Board ¡of ¡Educa5on’s ¡ Grading ¡and ¡Ranking ¡ Sub-­‑Commi9ee ¡ con5nued ¡to ¡explore ¡the ¡ remaining ¡emergent ¡issues, ¡tackling ¡whether ¡ or ¡not ¡to ¡eliminate ¡valedictorian/salutatorian ¡ and ¡all ¡weigh5ng ¡of ¡courses, ¡concurrently ¡with ¡ the ¡elimina5on ¡of ¡ranking ¡beginning ¡with ¡the ¡ Class ¡of ¡2014. ¡The ¡following ¡issues ¡were ¡ explored ¡when ¡considering ¡recommenda5ons: ¡ ¡

¡ ¡ Eliminate ¡All ¡WeighDng ¡of ¡Courses ¡? ¡ ¡ Our ¡current ¡weigh5ng ¡system ¡: ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡General ¡= ¡1.5, ¡Academic ¡= ¡1.6, ¡Honors ¡= ¡1.7, ¡AP ¡= ¡1.8 ¡ ¡ • We ¡have ¡not ¡iden5fied ¡any ¡other ¡schools ¡that: ¡ Ø U5lize ¡such ¡a ¡heavily ¡weighted ¡system. ¡ Ø Dis5nguish ¡between ¡“general” ¡and ¡“academic” ¡ Ø Provide ¡up ¡to ¡a ¡20% ¡bump ¡for ¡an ¡AP ¡course ¡(over ¡an ¡Academic ¡course) ¡ ¡ ¡ -­‑ ¡-­‑ ¡resul5ng ¡in ¡students ¡earning ¡weighted ¡GPAs ¡of ¡166 ¡or ¡higher ¡ ¡ Our ¡current ¡weigh5ng ¡system ¡is ¡not ¡equitable ¡in ¡terms ¡of ¡curricular ¡ • opportuni5es ¡for ¡all ¡students. ¡ Ø Art, ¡music, ¡business, ¡technology ¡do ¡not ¡have ¡honors ¡and/or ¡AP ¡op5ons. ¡ ¡ Ø There ¡are ¡no ¡honors ¡op5ons ¡for ¡10 th ¡and ¡11 th ¡grade ¡Social ¡studies ¡– ¡only ¡AP. ¡ ¡

• SHS ¡Report ¡Cards ¡have ¡always ¡included ¡only ¡unweighted ¡grades ¡ and ¡averages. ¡ • Honor ¡Roll ¡is ¡not ¡and ¡never ¡has ¡been ¡based ¡on ¡weighted ¡averages. ¡ • The ¡GPAs ¡u5lized ¡for ¡Na5onal ¡Honor ¡Society ¡eligibility ¡have ¡always ¡ been ¡unweighted. ¡ • Our ¡transcripts ¡have ¡always ¡displayed ¡only ¡an ¡unweighted ¡grade ¡ point ¡average. ¡ ¡ Ø Colleges ¡would ¡have ¡to ¡recalculate ¡the ¡GPA, ¡informed ¡by ¡the ¡weigh5ng ¡ key ¡(which ¡may ¡result ¡in ¡a ¡student ¡achieving ¡a ¡weighted ¡GPA ¡of ¡over ¡ 150!). ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ Ø Many ¡colleges ¡do ¡not ¡recalculate ¡GPAs ¡(ex, ¡Duke, ¡Harvard, ¡Penn, ¡ Georgetown, ¡Stanford). ¡Most ¡colleges, ¡if ¡they ¡recalculate, ¡use ¡their ¡own ¡ weigh5ng ¡system, ¡formulas ¡and ¡“core ¡courses”. ¡ Ø Colleges ¡consider ¡the ¡rigor ¡of ¡the ¡courses ¡(as ¡iden5fied ¡in ¡the ¡course ¡5tle), ¡ as ¡opposed ¡to ¡adding ¡points ¡to ¡a ¡final ¡grade ¡(especially ¡since ¡these ¡ prac5ces ¡are ¡inconsistent ¡across ¡the ¡na5on ¡and ¡subjec5vely ¡applied ¡by ¡ the ¡high ¡schools). ¡

Eliminate ¡Valedictorian/Salutatorian? ¡ The ¡Class ¡of ¡2013 ¡(this ¡year’s ¡seniors) ¡is ¡the ¡last ¡ class ¡to ¡be ¡ranked. ¡ ¡Therefore, ¡the ¡ques5on ¡became: ¡ ¡ Isn’t ¡con5nuing ¡Valedictorian ¡and ¡Salutatorian ¡ simply ¡another ¡means ¡of ¡ranking ¡and, ¡therefore ¡ ¡ perpetua5ng ¡the ¡inherent ¡problems ¡that ¡led ¡to ¡the ¡ elimina5on ¡of ¡ranking ¡for ¡all ¡(back ¡in ¡2009-­‑2010)? ¡ ¡ ¡ Ø There ¡have ¡been ¡presenta5ons ¡and ¡numerous ¡ discussions ¡at ¡Board ¡of ¡Educa5on ¡public ¡mee5ngs ¡since ¡ April, ¡in ¡which ¡alterna5ves ¡to ¡Val/Sal ¡were ¡presented, ¡ as ¡well ¡as ¡detailed ¡discussions ¡about ¡elimina5ng ¡all ¡ weigh5ng ¡of ¡courses. ¡

¡ The ¡ Grading ¡and ¡Ranking ¡Regula8ons ¡ on ¡ tonight’s ¡agenda ¡for ¡the ¡third ¡reading, ¡ ¡ embodies ¡the ¡following: ¡ • A ¡desire ¡for ¡transparency, ¡ ¡where ¡students ¡know ¡ the ¡criteria ¡for ¡aYaining ¡honors ¡designa5ons. ¡ ¡ ¡ ¡ Ø Students ¡can ¡monitor ¡their ¡GPAs ¡throughout ¡high ¡ school, ¡based ¡on ¡unweighted ¡averages, ¡and ¡ con5nually ¡assess ¡their ¡own ¡poten5al ¡for ¡earning ¡ honors ¡designa5ons ¡upon ¡gradua5on. ¡ ¡ • A ¡desire ¡to ¡recognize ¡the ¡hard ¡work ¡and ¡high ¡academic ¡ achievement ¡of ¡more ¡than ¡just ¡two ¡students, ¡especially ¡ where ¡there ¡are ¡a ¡number ¡of ¡5ghtly ¡grouped ¡high ¡ achievers. ¡ ¡
