PROBLEM STATEMENT The previous state of water supply in Bamenda III was characterized by inadequate capacities of water supply, incoherent water supply networks, unprotected water catchments, poorly maintained water supply network and infrastructure and doubtful quality of water supply with less than 20% of the population accessing safe water (Bamenda III Land Use Plan 2012) www.bamenda3council.org

Introduction of the project Bamenda III Council in Partnership with Trinkwasser für Kamerun (Association for the promotion of Drinking Water supply in Cameroon) had as priority to develop a purified water scheme that shall collect, treat and supply clean portable water within the Sub Division of Bamenda III Municipality . www.bamenda3council.org

OUR BEST PRACTICE INNITIATIVE • The practice involves partnering with an external partner, collaborating with local institutions and mobilizing local communities in the development of a water supply scheme for Bamenda III Council area. • The concrete activities include the development and protection of the water supply catchment; the installation of water purification and storage facilities and the distribution of water and the proper management and maintenance of water supply. www.bamenda3council.org

Bamenda III water scheme • As concerns the water distribution points within the Municipality there exist 7 standby taps in six quarters. • From January 2019 to 0ctober, the total consumption is evaluated to an amount of 105,000 users (Estimated population 200,000 people)in both the public and private distributions. The water supply projects generates an annual contribution of about 50,000000Frs , (84 679USD) to council revenue which is ploughed back to financing the management of the scheme .The above statistics is mindful of the fact that school children and some vulnerable persons are not charged at the public distribution point www.bamenda3council.org

  10. THE WATER SCHEME • The volume of the water reservoir at the moment is 280 000 litres which can supply 40 000 liters of water per hour. This can serve about 38000 people per day at minimum UN water supply standard of 7.5l/person/day. The constr he construction of uction of the the Second R Second Reser eservoir oir • After several testing of the water turbidity, temperature and the chlorine was recorded and reported to our team of experts in Germany, it was realized later in 2016 that the water supply was insufficient to meet the needs of the inhabitants of the Municipality. Hence, the second Giant Tank of a capacity of two hundred thousand Litres (200,000L) was constructed and which led to the increase in production capacity of about 40,000litres per hour www.bamenda3council.org

Some of the problems encountered in our city • In spite of the positive results obtained this far, the Bamenda III Council Water Scheme encounters a number of problems .The funds available to the Council to meet present and future demands and needs of water for the entire population are grossly inadequate. • The problem of garbage collection stands as one of the major challenges in our city. Others include ;Poor road infrastructure, Energy shortage, • Lack of Educational infrastructure especially at the higher level. www.bamenda3council.org
