  4. In most communities, the beach is typically a "no - go zone" for people with disabilities because it is too difficult to navigate for someone with mobility issues or visual impairment. The sand is a natural barrier to entry for wheelchairs, causing wheels to get stuck if attempted to traverse over. INNOVATIVE INITIATIVES In 2012, The Sabrina Cohen Foundation approached Miami Beach Officials with a novel idea: LET’S CREATE A BEACH FOR ALL. I n the summer of 2016 , SCF launched "Adaptive Beach Days," a twice - monthly program at 6475 Collins Avenue that includes adaptive surfing, ocean therapy, yoga/meditation and art therapy . A team of qualified staff and volunteers work together to stage an entire area of the beach to make it accessible . Creating a platform of access decks across the sand, setting up tents, transferring participants into beach wheelchairs and using other adaptive beach equipment for lounging and comfort make it all possible .
