2017 Code Laws of Cricket Compile led by D. Close se
Law Changes Bat size limits – CNW not adopting 9 wickets down applies to lunch as well as tea Take interval if wicket falls within 3 mins – changed from 2 (in line with Timed Out) Declarations produce a 10 min changeover regardless – either absorbed into interval or taken from playing time.
HELMETS Can be out caught if a ball bounces off a fielder’s helmet. Can be run out if a ball directly rebounds on to the stumps from a fielder’s helmet. Can be stumped if a ball directly rebounds off the keeper’s helmet on to the stumps. It is out caught if a ball lodges in a fielder’s helmet that is being worn. The ball is NOT DEAD if it lodges in a fielder’s helmet that is being worn.
AIRBORNE FIELDERS For all airborne fielders, they must have left the ground from inside the boundary before their first touch of the ball for a catch to be completed (also inside the boundary) or a boundary saved. i.e. no fielder’s first touch can be directly after jumping from on or outside the boundary.
NO BALL If a ball bounces more than once. (1 st , 2 nd & U17 only) If a ball pitches (or partially pitches) off the pitch. If a fielder intercepts before it reaches the striker then no ball then immediately dead ball. Consequences for a deliberate front foot no ball. No balls and extras recorded separately now. Now only 3 ways out from a no ball – Obs the field, Run Out, Hit the ball twice. Handled the ball no longer exists in it’s own right – absorbed into Obstructing the field.
FIELDERS LEAVING THE FIELD (or not starting) NO grace time anymore, i.e. a fielder must serve actual time off the field up to a maximum of 90 minutes. This carries forward into batting innings (5 wickets down applies) and/or next day’s play. No penance time for external blow (work commitment & 12 players exceptions) Substitute can act as keeper with umpires consent (to prevent sharp practice). This would normally be if the keeper is injured. RUNNERS Runner cannot leave crease early – treated the same as a ‘no -shot leg- bye’.
ILLEGAL FIELDING Clarifies deliberate discarding as opposed to accidental in terms of 5 penalty runs. BOUNCING BAT Not Out Run Out if batter makes their ground with the bat and then subsequently loses contact with the ground when the wicket is broken, provided he/she has continued forward momentum from running or diving.
BATSMAN RECALL A batsman can now be recalled up to when the ball becomes live for the next delivery (previously before he/she left the field) LBW Clarifies simultaneous contact with bat and pad is not out. It is to be considered the ball first touched the bat.
LAW 41 – UNFAIR PLAY All above waist full tosses are no balls. Attracts 1 st & final warning, “if likely to inflict physical injury”. All warn-able offences are now 1 st and final except bowler running in protected area (2 warnings) Ball tampering – 1 st time replace ball, 5 run penalty etc. 2 nd time the bowler who bowled the preceding ball is removed for the match . Deliberate distraction in preparing to or in receiving the ball is a straight up 5 run penalty.

If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batsman will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.
