Preschool perspectives via SDQTs • https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/life-stages/child-health/b4-school- check/b4-school-check-information-early-learning-services • The SDQ- T asks for teacher’s observations, using their professional judgement, about a child’s interactions as the child participates in the early childhood education environment. • The B4 School Check is an opportunity for health professionals and early education service providers to work with parents and caregivers to ensure a child can reach their potential.
The SDQ tool: Is made up of 5 scales: 1) Emotional symptoms: 5 items 2) Conduct problems: 5 items 3) Hyperactivity: 5 items 4) Peer problems: 5 items The 4 scales above are added together to generate a total difficulties score. 5) Prosocial behaviour: 5 items Prosocial score is not added to the total difficulties score
An impact supplement: The second page of the SDQ asks the person filling out the questionnaire whether they think the child has a problem. If so, enquires further about • Chronicity • Distress • Social impairment • Burden to others

Encourage Enrolment in ECE/Kohanga Reo MoE (07) 850 8880 ask to be put through to ECE Participation – or email: Gill.Brown@education.govt.nz Check vision and hearing. If not checked, can refer to Vision and hearing for follow up as a non-ECE child

SDQT child has attachment issues with mother - mother teaches at centre. Mother is away for a month and head teacher will review to assess her ability to be resilient. Alternatively a referral may be required to Paediatrics or ICAMHS re anxiety. DISCUSSION: Why the difference? Actions? Referrals?
Child 4 • NZE, Dep 3, Cambridge SDQP
SDQT s/w preschool teacher regarding conduct, behavioural issues and high total score. Preschool is working with mum. Mum says that those behaviours don't happen at home. But that the child does mimic behaviours of older brother who has recently been diagnosed as autistic. Preschool has a plan to observe, document and manage behaviour for a month, then reassess with family. DISCUSSION: Why the difference? Actions? Referrals?

SDQT’s – reminders • Check SDQT for results (and VHT) prior to completing B4 SC - so you can discuss these with parents while they are there. May help to reenforce existing referrals, or to inform potential referrals • You can phone the preschool to discuss any of your/parental concerns • You can recommend to families that they discuss with the preschool • EG – preschool needs parental request/consent to initiate interventions such as toileting, or for referrals. Communicate with preschool • When posting SDQT to preschool, you could add a compliments slip with your details and a request for the preschool to complete and return
