Focus: Hasidic Population The city consulted only two community groups before developing a housing plan for the vacant city-owned lots within the Broadway Triangle: one serving senior citizens, and the other serving the Orthodox Jewish population. With the initial Broadway Triangle proposal from HPD, black and Hispanic groups in Bed- Stuy and Bushwick sued the city, not only because they were not consulted, but because it was believed that the proposal was directly targeting the Hasidic population based on the large size of the apartments and low building heights.
Where is the Hasidic Population? Of the 84,000 yiddish speakers in New York City, 95% of them are in Brooklyn. Tract 509 (the top of the Broadway Triangle) has an extremely high concentration of yiddish speakers. 1% 3% 18% 66% BK CD 1 Tract 509 New York City Brooklyn Source: 2011 American Community Survey, 5 year estimates

Conclusions and Next Steps The Hasidic community is tightly woven in Williamsburg due to a rich history, and established political activism and connections for housing issues. The mixing of the manufacturing past and the current families of Tract 509 can be seen distinctly through an analysis of various elements of each block. Some next considerations to further investigate this demographic would be to quantify ways in which the Hasidic population can be observed through Census data. Number of children? Average Age? Size of apartments?
