  10. 01 /24/2012 Legislative Interactions Harvesting with the Ag Stars • 18 Legislators participated in the inaugural year • Paired legislators w ith corn and soybean farmers from their district East River Legislative Tour SODA helped coordinate the East River Legislative Tour with DENR & GF&P. • Over 20 individuals participated in the tour • Featured 11 sites Agriculture; Environment & N atu r al Resources; Game, Fi sh & Parks 19 -- Agricultural Services Noxious Weeds • Over a million acre decrease in all noxious weeds A ne w w eed w as added to the l oca lly noxious li s t. • 28,000 acre decrease in State noxious weeds Over 1 million bio-control agents giv en to private l ando wner for the control of Leafy Spurge, Mullein, Spo tt ed knapweed, and the toadflaxes. • Intergovernmental cooperation has improved the weed control on our state owned lands and right-of-ways. • Distribution of an educational booklet and development of an Ear ly Detection web based re porti ng system • $450,000 in grants funds to the counties and others for control of noxious weeds and pests l.O 10

Wildland Fire Suppression • 1,254 fi res on federal lands whi ch burned 97,248 acres, along with 52 1 fires on State and private lands w it h in the State of South Dakota that were responded to by SODA and/or local volunteer fire depa rt men ts . • Hand crews treated 2100 acres of hazardous fu els, burn ed 20 ,589 piles and used prescribed fire to burn 500 acres of forest ed and grass lands. • Conducted 57 train in g classes conduct ed thro ug h ou t the state for: Vo lu nteer fi re dep artme nt s, Local fi re agenc i es , Fe d eral agenc i es , a nd State agenc i es . • Help ed out other states in their time of need by sendi ng resources. 22 11

  12. 01 /24/2012 Local Forestry • Provided 12 "Community Forestry Challenge Grants" to South Dakota communities for a total of $40,180. • Recertified 36 communities as "Tree City, USA's ." • Supported the international environmental education program "Project Learning Tree." • Funded 24 "Coordinated Natural Resource Conservation Program" grant applications tota li ng $865,869 23 Wine & Cheese Pavilion • In 201 1, $39,250 grossed in wine, beer and cheese products. In 2007, sales reached only $18 , 000 . • 13 wine ri es and 33 varieties of wi ne • 2 brewe ri es and 6 different South Dakota beers • 6 cheese plants provided 15 different varieties of cheese for sampling and sales ,. 12
